Cenotes

Cenote Ik Kil, an open well draped in vines just five minutes from the ruins, is the classic pairing with Chichen Itza. For something different, Cenote Suytun near Valladolid is famous for the beam of light that hits its central platform around midday, making it one of the most photographed cenotes in Yucatan.

Maya sites and towns

Valladolid rewards an afternoon of strolling its pastel streets, the Calzada de los Frailes and the cathedral square. Ek Balam, 30 minutes north, lets you climb its acropolis for sweeping jungle views, while Coba, further south, offers a quieter, jungle-wrapped site you explore by bike.
